At Ad Valorem Group, we talk a lot about career progression. But more importantly, we build structures that make it possible.
Many firms promise development opportunities. Our focus has always been on creating real pathways that allow people to grow from potential into leadership, supported by the right environment, mentoring and opportunities along the way.
The result is something we are incredibly proud of: careers that evolve with the individual, not rigid job titles or timelines.
Below are just a few examples of how that journey can look in practice.
From Trainee to Pod Leader: Jack’s Story
One of the best examples of career progression in action is Jack Biggs, one of our Pod Leaders in Milton Keynes.
Jack joined Ad Valorem originally as a trainee. Alongside completing a first-class degree in Economics, he went on to qualify as a Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) while steadily building experience within the business.
Over time, Jack began taking on more responsibility, developing not just technically but also as a leader.
Three years ago, he stepped into one of our Pod Leader roles, and he has been thriving in it ever since.
What does a Pod Leader do?
Jack leads a pod of four people, made up of:
- A qualified accountant
- A bookkeeper
- Trainees coming through the system
But the role goes far beyond managing work.
A Pod Leader is responsible for:
- Coaching and developing their team
- Maintaining quality and technical standards
- Managing workflow and delivery
- Building a supportive, high-performing team culture
It is a role designed to bridge the gap between being technically strong and becoming a confident leader.
Exposure beyond day-to-day compliance
Jack’s development has not been limited to compliance work.
He has also been involved in two major waves of change at Ad Valorem:
- Being part of the team that fully embraced our cloud transformation
- Contributing to our AI Innovation Hub, helping explore how artificial intelligence can be adopted in practical, real-world ways
Alongside this, Jack has also supported Tom Foot with due diligence work on acquisitions, giving him valuable exposure to strategic projects beyond everyday client delivery.
One of the things that stands out most about Jack is his quiet ambition.
He does not seek the spotlight.
He focuses on doing the work well, developing his team and delivering results.
And that is exactly the kind of leadership we value.
From School Leaver to Director: Alex’s Story
Another brilliant example of career development at Ad Valorem is Alex Black FCCA, now our Director of Client Services & Innovation.
Alex joined the firm as a school leaver.
From the very beginning he showed a combination of:
- Curiosity
- Strong technical ability
- An innovative mindset
He quickly progressed through his studies and qualified as ACCA at a young age.
But rather than pushing Alex down a single traditional pathway, we encouraged him to explore where his strengths were developing.
That led him to:
- Lead and grow our R&D tax function for several years
- Work with clients on complex advisory projects
- Move into a broader leadership role focused on client experience, service delivery and innovation
Today, Alex plays a key role in shaping how we develop our services and adopt new technologies across the business.
Alongside this, he has also:
- Been shortlisted for a Rising Star Award
- Spoken at industry events
- Maintained active involvement with ACCA
His journey perfectly reflects something we believe strongly:
Careers should evolve with the individual.
Why We Created the Pod Leader Role
As Ad Valorem has grown, we have been intentional about designing roles that support genuine development.
The Pod Leader role is a key part of that.
It is not just another qualified accountant position. It is a deliberate leadership pathway designed to support the transition from strong individual performer to confident people leader.
In the role, Pod Leaders:
- Lead client delivery
- Set quality and performance standards
- Coach and develop team members
- Build strong team culture within their pod
Each pod typically includes four to five people, creating a close-knit unit that works together to deliver outstanding results for clients.
For many people, it becomes the natural stepping stone towards Senior Manager and Director-level roles.
Proof the Pathway Works
One of the strongest examples of long-term progression is Tom Foot, our Compliance Director in Milton Keynes.
Tom joined Ad Valorem six years ago when we acquired Taylor Roberts, where he joined as a Senior Manager.
Today, Tom is:
- Leading the group’s compliance function
- A Director and Shareholder in the business
- Supporting and mentoring multiple Pod Leaders across the group
This is exactly the kind of development we aim to create:
- Talent being nurtured
- Leadership being developed intentionally
- People building long-term careers within the firm
Careers Built on Potential, Not Just Job Titles
Across the firm, one theme runs through many of our career stories.
People rarely arrive as the finished article.
Instead, they grow through:
- Opportunity
- Mentoring
- Responsibility
- And the space to explore where their strengths lie
That is why we focus on developing people, not just filling roles.
Whether someone joins us as a trainee, a school leaver, or an experienced accountant, the goal is the same:
To help them build a career that is both challenging and fulfilling, while contributing to a team culture that supports everyone around them.
Thinking About Your Next Career Move?
If you are a qualified accountant looking for more than a static career ladder, Ad Valorem might be the right place for you.
Our Pod Leader role is designed for people who want to combine:
- Technical excellence
- People leadership
- Long-term progression
All within a business that values innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.
We are always keen to speak with talented people who share that mindset.
